How we began
North Staffs LinkLine began in 2007, inspired by the experiences of a local parish priest in Clayton. Through his work with families, he saw first-hand how loneliness and isolation can affect people, spending long hours alone, often with only a television or radio for company.
He recognised that something as simple as a regular, friendly telephone call could make a real difference. A small group of volunteers shared this vision, and together they created North Staffs LinkLine; built on a shared commitment to community, compassion and connection.
Today, that same purpose continues to guide everything we do.
We provide a telephone befriending service offering friendship, information and advice to people who may otherwise feel alone. Our regular calls bring reassurance and connection; helping people feel remembered, valued, and part of a wider community.
No one should feel alone.
For many people, having someone to talk to can improve wellbeing, ease worries, and provide comfort. Whether it’s sharing how you feel, talking through concerns, or simply enjoying a friendly chat, our volunteers are there to listen. Every conversation is treated with warmth, respect, and complete confidentiality.
At the heart of LinkLine is something very simple but incredibly important – a listening ear.
What we do
No one should feel alone.
Many older people in our community live alone, and for some, loneliness can become part of everyday life. Sometimes, a simple telephone call can make all the difference.
At North Staffs LinkLine, we provide regular, friendly calls that bring connection, comfort, and reassurance. Through our telephone befriending service, we offer friendship, as well as information and advice, helping people feel supported and less isolated.
Our calls create a sense of belonging, reminding people that they are not forgotten and that they are part of a wider, caring community. Having someone to talk to means being able to share how you’re feeling, speak about worries or concerns, or simply enjoy a friendly chat.
Everything we do is built on trust, and all conversations are treated in the strictest confidence.
At its heart, our service is about something simple but powerful – making sure someone is there to listen.
Who provides the Service
How Does it Work
We provide regular, friendly telephone calls to people who may be feeling lonely or isolated, offering connection, reassurance and something to look forward to.
These calls are delivered by our wonderful team of volunteers, the friendly voices on the end of the phone. They take the time to listen, chat and build genuine relationships, helping people feel valued, heard and part of a wider community.
Many of our volunteers have been with LinkLine for years, bringing warmth, experience and a real understanding of the people they support. Behind the scenes, our experienced Manager ensures the service runs smoothly day to day, supporting both volunteers and those using the service.
Together, we make sure that every call is friendly, consistent and completely confidential, offering not just conversation, but comfort and connection.
